    You asked in the video why corporations or well-funded researchers aren’t working on ion lifter craft. The answer is simple, ion propulsion is exceedingly weak. Ion lifter craft have no appreciable payload, they can handle no wind at all, and because their total mass to volume ratio (aka density) must be low enough in order for this very weak thrust to lift its own weight their frames are too weak to do any real work. So forget cargo delivery, forget atmospheric probes, forget construction or rescue operations. Ion lifters are pretty much just toys.

    @Tech Planet –
    Combine the saucer style Ion craft @ 3:09 with mercury based levitation & you have the "Flux Liner" or the "Reichsflugscheiben"

    Ten years ago I wanted to build something like number two. I wanted to build a model flying saucer using a jet engine and the quander effect, but lacked finance and sadly my collaborator passed away.

    Yes the MAGMA UAV is impressive. I should be. It’s backed by 50 + years of research from Robert J Englar. He proved all this could work in the 60’s in the U.S. but no programs were ever built around it. He told me this tech could get a fully loaded passenger plane off the ground at 65 mph yet push Mach 1 with little drag penalty. Pretty sad that America let’s great innovations and their private, military and economic advantages go to other countries.

    The reason that companies are not working on ion craft is because they don’t scale up well.

  41. William Agardy on April 2, 2020 at 2:50 pm

    Before you state that this was the first successful flight of an ion propelled aircraft, I suggest that you look in the August 1964 issue of Popular Mechanics Magazine. On page 58 is the article entitled Major de Seversky’s Ion-Propelled Aircraft. Photographs in that article clearly show his prototype "flying." On the cover of that magazine issue is an artists depiction of a manned Ion-Propelled aircraft.

  44. BLKBRDSR71 on April 2, 2020 at 2:56 pm

    2:25 Ionic power in something the size of a 747 would require an immense amount of power. You would literally have to have a nuclear reactor to power the plane. And we all know that would be a disaster.

  45. Reuben Vaughan on April 2, 2020 at 2:58 pm

    The Ion tech was apparently used on the stealth bomber. The idea had first been developed in the 50’s and the US military took the idea and developed it behind closed doors. I often wonder how far they have taken electrical propulsion.
