Brian thank you for what you teach me. I am attempting to automate my home. You give me the confidence that I need.

Nice comprehensive video Brian. You covered a lot of ground. Great job!

Great video, saw quite a lot of them right now on your channel on how to automate your life..however most of the devices/ systems are designed to function in North America rather than Europe. Any tips/ recommendations what kind of systems/ brands can be used over here?

Thanks Brian, from a loyal follower in Warsaw, Poland, SmartThings is my preferred hub as well and works just fine :). Cool to see you review the stuff I use as well, like the Aeotec sensors and doorbell.

Hi Brian. I think I found my next purchase, I live in safe neighborhood , but these days, who knows? Thanks for going into detail on this.

Noob here… will this work fully with google home to where I don’t set up anything through ST? Thx

  9. Z Tee on May 25, 2021 at 11:49 pm

    Where to buy the hub?

Sorry if you say it in the video as I’m just starting to rewatch it & I think I already asked you but does smart things work with Google assistant or is it just through Samsung? I believe they are Samsung products & which do you prefer Samsung smart things, Google, Wyze, & zigbee or whatever that one is called? Sorry I’m still debating & trying to decide which to go with & getting ready to do my own smart home security system. So I guess which do you prefer or even if you prefer certain products from each company? & Do any besides the Google products work with Google assistant/Google hub? I mainly use Google so that’s why I’m leaning towards Google. But I used to be all about Samsung & esp Samsung Galaxy products. But now I have the Google pixel XL 4 & the Google pixel slate plus the nest hub max & a few nest mini’s which I started with my tablet & basic stuff to set up & turn my older but still nice tv into a smart TV in my room bc I got a new bigger & super nice smart TV for my living room. But now I’m really getting into turning my house into a smart home & am looking at various products & really want to put up cameras & do security along with all the other cool stuff like light bulbs, plugs, sensors, cameras, & just all sorts of fun things coming out now as well as the Google speaker. I might go the cheaper way with sensors & cameras & go with wize but curious if smart things are around the same price or quite a bit more expensive? Sorry for probably repeating myself & I’m going to make lists & prices plus which works with Google. I know Wyze doesn’t but the app can still work with my pixel so if the price is really right it’s not a big deal at least to start with. Also I don’t know a lot about zigbee too so curious if them & smart things are around the same price as smart things or which is the cheapest & which you prefer for the price. I know the Google cameras are probably way better but of course will cost a lot more. Thank you for all your great videos & helping me turn my house into the future & a smart home! I love your videos & info & always watch you first & most vs any other tech channels bc you aren’t biased, your honest, & you like Google & Alexia stuff & don’t make it sound like apple is the only option & I only eat apples! Lol sorry so long & probably confusing & thanks again for such simple & great advice!

Are there any sirens that are compatible and don’t require subscriptions…

Very detailed and helpful tutorial. We thank you for all that you do!

It’s been a couple weeks now since I designed and fully installed a complete smart home system after watching your videos! It’s amazing, I am 50, I hate technology and frankly, I’ve always hated gadgets and things with buttons. After getting two outrageous quotes for a smart home system ($5k and $3500) I searched YouTube and found your videos. Everyone who knows me is blown away… For around $650 (thank you Amazon) I have a better system than any professional quoted me and no monthly fees! Multiple cameras, door & window sensors, lights speakers, automations… Thank you again for making all of this so easy to understand.

The Hubs are hard to find nov I am in Canada can’t ind one under 300 for that I can get a Ring alarm and still have money in my pocket

  15. Nir Avniel on May 25, 2021 at 11:56 pm

    Hi, how are you?
Is there any motion sensors that will alert only if it identify human ?
I want to use motion sensors for security , but at night, sometimes cats or other animals can cause a motion and I dont want the siren or alerts to be sent, and I want to receive alerts and turn the siren on when a human is detected.
Is there such a motion sensor?

  16. James on May 25, 2021 at 11:59 pm

Do you run your SmartThings hub behind a UPS? It seems like currently you are vulnerable under power loss conditions. Also, if internet goes down?

  17. Shaun Oneil on May 26, 2021 at 12:02 am

Amazing video! Quick question about the action tiles on the fire HD. Can you get action tiles on an Amazon show and do the same thing with an Amazon show?

  18. PAI HI-TECH on May 26, 2021 at 12:02 am

    Smartthings or hubitat?

  19. Coldtouch on May 26, 2021 at 12:02 am

Thanks for all the info you provide. I just ordered a smart things kit but have found I can not order any sensors for it like a water leak. I’m confused will there be no more sensors for this? Thanks

  20. Scott Hachey on May 26, 2021 at 12:03 am

Hi there, how does your SmartThings alarm system know that you are away? Does it track cell phones or do you need to arm it on the app?

  21. Nir Avniel on May 26, 2021 at 12:03 am

    Hi,
the response delay option in the security system is for both armed and disarm ?
I mean, when I enter the house can I have 1 minute delay before the siren will start so I can disarm my system?
And also, when I arm the system, it will wait 1 minute and then arm it?

  22. John Szatkowski on May 26, 2021 at 12:04 am

Yeah the problem is that Smartthings is TOTALLY reliant on an internet connection! If your internet is down the security system is a TOTAL BRICK and does nothing! I recently found this out due to a major cable outage and the system was rendered USELESS! Other than some lighting routines that still worked there was NO security features. Major flaw! I ended up going with Ring with a cellular backup and only costs 100bucks a year for my security solution. I still use Smartthings for my home automation but for a security setup Smartthings IS NOT the way to go….

Silly question, what happens if the burglars manage to a/ Take out the houses power system b/Come in the house with a wifi inhibittor (taking out all wifi communication). I would really think a propper robust system will have a plan B functionality running on 12V battery in a safe, with a monster alarm in that safe with sound holes. Apart from all the fancy connectivity tech I doubt is really robust.

  26. DavidFrat123 on May 26, 2021 at 12:11 am

Annoyingly, I can’t seem to use Google’s own speakers to say aloud alerts or sirens. Anyone got any ideas on how to do this?

  27. Joe Hilton on May 26, 2021 at 12:13 am

    Isn’t smart things going away?

  28. PhillyDjHook on May 26, 2021 at 12:14 am

I have that same Keypad 4:16 ADT Pulse. Can you connect that to Samsung Smart Things?

  29. Juan S Flores on May 26, 2021 at 12:14 am

Can I make that google assistant speaks or that it say something on my nest mini speaker when the smarthings door sensor is open?…or setting an alarm on my phone, not just a notification when this happens?. I don’t know how to do that.

  30. Charon on May 26, 2021 at 12:14 am

What happens when SmartThings goes down for whatever reason or if at certain times of the day some sensors are not reachable due to WiFii issues?

  31. rmccall66 on May 26, 2021 at 12:15 am

Hey Brian great video. My issue is a subscription fee maybe cheaper than replacing the batteries as often as I have to. I have Samsung smartthing s devices which I am constantly changing batteries.

  32. Danny Flynn on May 26, 2021 at 12:18 am

Can this setup be run off an amazon hub , like a ahow? I have lots invested into smart devices already.

  33. Kamal Kamra on May 26, 2021 at 12:19 am

One of the weak spot in all of these custom systems is Cellular Backup. How can I get alerts from these systems if my internet goes down? I have a pre-paid SIM from T-Mobile for voice dialing or text. Or may be use Freedom Pop solution with free small amount of data.

  34. DavidFrat123 on May 26, 2021 at 12:19 am

Bought a Samsung speaker. I can play an audio message as part of the security system, but when I select the bells/dogs barking/fire alarm, they don’t work =S so confusing !

  35. John van der Linden on May 26, 2021 at 12:20 am

Hi thanks for the video!!! Many times I miss notifications, do you have a tip on how to set notifications louder and longer? When I don’t hear them they are useless. Thanks

  36. AYOUB YOUNIS on May 26, 2021 at 12:21 am

so what if you have a load speakers connected to the alarm system and you were gone for a long period of a time and the speakers needs to be charged in order to maintain operation, such as Bose, can i keep it plugged into the power, or would that kills the battery ?

  37. NihilTimendumEst on May 26, 2021 at 12:22 am

Paying a company to monitor your home is a waste of money. But I’m willing to pay a company or someone to install it.

  38. Kyle Hutchins on May 26, 2021 at 12:25 am

Thank you we recently moved and I really don’t know if our neighborhood is safe and I don’t want to spend a lot so I will most likely be investing in this system

  39. tdtone2 on May 26, 2021 at 12:26 am

Great video!! I set up my phone to automatically arm and disarm my security system when I arrive and leave from home but the app doesn’t show the option for me to do the same with my child on my phone. Even though the app shows my child as a member. Do I need to set that opinion up on the child’s phone?

  40. Captinprivate on May 26, 2021 at 12:26 am

Great Vid!.. My question is off topic,. Do ant of my fellow automators know of a battery base for the Nest mini? I can find them for the home mini but the nest has been elusive.

  41. Eric Tello on May 26, 2021 at 12:26 am

Why are these hubs so hard to find now it seems like Best Buy and amazon don’t really carry them anymore? This this is still the best hub or is there better hub options now?

  42. Michael Toub on May 26, 2021 at 12:28 am

  43. Michael Weber on May 26, 2021 at 12:29 am

Was wondering how you would recommend setting up smartthings alexa and Google. We have been using alexa for many years now. Would you recommend integrating everything into st and then to voice? Or keep all the devices integrated in voice and also st?

Is the clear tape sold as Alien Tape?

  45. Brendan White on May 26, 2021 at 12:32 am

Thank you for the full walk through It was long, but there is a lot of good information here.
I like the Samsung Vision sensor. I can see it as being a good replacement for motion sensors to be honest. I would call it sensor more than a camera though. I know it grabs images, but they are not really recognizable as images like a normal camera. Definitely a great option to prevent false positives though.

  46. Chares on May 26, 2021 at 12:32 am

Heya, love the video with the depth that a starting person might need (I was actually searching for one to explain the whole thing to a colleague). not sure if it was mentioned or not, but I think you missed the fact that some integrations like sonos are geolocked, and that smartapps are also geolocked, and some of the sensors are not sold on all countries just the basic ones, not accounting that z-wave needs to be specifically certified in each country, meaning aeotec will not always sell their full spectrum of devices in all markets, so its easier to stick with zigbee if possible.

  47. Yves R on May 26, 2021 at 12:32 am

I have a Smartthing hub and movement Sensor at the front door, as well as a Wyze cam looking out the front door walkway, and I have IFTTT & Google Assistant accounts. How can I set an automation where if the front door Smartthings sensor senses movement, automatically have the Wyze cam video displayed to my Google hub display as well as my LG TV Chromecast if possible? Been trying to figure out a way and can’t do it. Maybe this veteran is too old and obviously not technically inclined enough… ))) thank you for the assistance.
