Astrophotography Cameras in 2020. What's the Best Choice?

Astrophotography Cameras: What’s the Best Choice?

1. Canon EOS DSLR:
2. ZWO ASI533MC Pro:
3. Starlight Xpress SX-42 Camera Kit:

In this video, I explain the key differences between 3 astrophotography cameras, and what they’re best at. I cover the pros and cons of each camera and share a number of example images using each.

Beginners often start out with a DSLR (Digital Single-Lens Reflex) camera because they are affordable and versatile – and I still think this is the best route to take.

I took the time to do some research on which ASI camera I was going to buy, full comparisons in Stellarium with the scopes I have and the short list that I was looking at and it all came down to the ZWO ASI294MC Pro… and just got it today. Thanks Trevor

For us noobs, do you have to take multiple shots with a DSLR and stack with a program or take one picture and work on it with a program?

These videos are so good . Thank you very much for posting them .

I would like to buy a mirror less camera , but I have no idea what all the technical specs mean .

Would you mind recommending a Canon mirror less camera for under $ 1000 .

I want to get started in this hobby by taking wide angle and deep space pictures with a tracking mount for long exposures.

Thank you for the help – Rob

Astrophoto for me is about fun and delight, so – a modified DSLR and a sky tracker. Nothing more.

Thanks for sharing ,I have a question,, I have tried to use Lumix G9 which is micro 4 3rd, but having problems with viewing the whole subject in & it seems to crop the image which makes it impossible to take a full image of the moon

Just got a 6D body for 495 with a grip off eBay. I do a TON of landscape and 50mm to 135mm shots so I don’t quite need monochrome

  16. ZippLineStudios on December 13, 2021 at 9:45 pm

instead of using your Finger to make changes on your DLSR menu, you should use an eraser or touch pad pen. less shake. great info and great channel

  17. Geoffrey Oliver on December 13, 2021 at 9:45 pm

I’m a beginner in photography and astrophotography. I have a Panasonic LUMIX that I’ve been able to catch some pretty cool shots of the moon with. I enjoy watching your videos and am looking forward to seeing where this takes me. Cheers!

  20. David Coelho on December 13, 2021 at 9:48 pm

I have a question, I am a beginner in astrophotography! I am interested since November 2020 but only have a phone to do astrophotography that is very bad:/ And I have a budget of 600€!!
I wanted to ask if you could suggest a cam that is good for photography and that is able to do astrophotography too:) Not just wide angle from all the stars but a DSLR cam that is able to do pictures of deep sky objects.
I think it is literally impossible because of the budget:(

  21. Suze Siviter on December 13, 2021 at 9:50 pm

A good bit of good design and I bet you could use a Peltier cooler, a fan and a lens with 2 holes, to pump cold air across the sensor. If you could cool it that way, you could use a much better modern mirrorless CMOS sensor, you could also use narrow bandwidth filters, or at least buy the material from an optics company and make your own.

  22. Anon Ymous on December 13, 2021 at 9:50 pm

You mention Bayer but not one word about X Trans?

In this context it is something you should address, Trevor, especially considering the benefits in this context over Bayer.

  23. Pieter Roelofse on December 13, 2021 at 9:52 pm

Hey Trevor. So if I should buy the dedicated ZWO astro camera, how would I use that with a lens only? How would you attach it to a lens. I do not own a telescope.

  24. Rick Knight on December 13, 2021 at 9:52 pm

I got a svbony sc305 and got the same results as these cameras. It only cost me a fraction of what I would have spent with these cameras.

  32. FullSpectrumuk on December 13, 2021 at 10:04 pm

This is basically not that camera that matters the most but the tracker. Slap on a tracker anything and it will get
    something interesting.

  33. Ramesh Tahlan on December 13, 2021 at 10:04 pm

your videos are always great. Now a question, How can I attach the ASI 294MC Pro to my Canon EF lenses. I have Canon 17-40L f/4, 24-105L f/4, canon 100-400L. ??? If there are adapters, I would appreciate if you could give a link, rather than me ordering the wrong item.

Hey one doubt, when using a DSLR/Mirrorless camera, do we need a dedicated telescope or just the lens skills do fine?
I’m thinking of starting in Astrophotography and I’m a total beginner.

Very interesting video, my question is that, not once you mentioned megapixels, are those not as important as noise and other factors?
