How dangerous is Big Tech? | DW Analysis

In March 2021, at the height of the coronavirus pandemic, four of Europe’s most powerful women sent a letter to Brussels. It included a dire warning. The pandemic had shown how much the EU depends on foreign technology, they wrote — and this needs to change.
Their language was diplomatic — but the underlying message was clear: It’s time to rein in Big Tech.
Governments around the globe have set their eyes on the world’s largest tech companies.
We might not always notice it — but technology is all around us. We use it to communicate, to get information, to organize our lives. And almost all that technology is made by private companies.
This has given rise to an industry known as Big Tech. And within this industry, four companies have become especially powerful: Alphabet — which owns Google — Amazon, Facebook and Apple.
In fact, they’re so big now they’re known as the “Big Four,” or by their acronym “GAFA.”
Those “Big Four” actually run fairly different businesses. But what they have in common is that they provide digital services — and they have become so ingrained in our lives that it’s almost impossible to avoid them.
But how did Big Tech come under so much fire?
And how did it get so “Big” in the first place?

More power will come from East where one government controls everything. Western countries would stand no chance in such a case.

Even though microsoft is largely an enterprise company now, I am still amazed at how it’s being ignored in these anti trust and tech dominance matters. It has big clout in almost every technological space be it enterprise software, consumer software, hardware, cloud, AI and the list goes on.

    A couple of recommendations.
1… All big tech platforms sets out a set of rules and guidelines.
2… all subscribers to such platforms must register with verified identification.
3…. all big tech must be held accountable for news and false news spread on their platforms.

Alibaba, jack ma, china gov. Western r all talks, but no action. China less talk, but act on it. Their priority is fundamentally different, china priority is to protect the fair competition and its people from the rich, while western priority is how much u can pay for us to cover up ur exploitation and monopoly. Look at how much time and money wasted on western world trying to hold these giants accountable, and now look at china how they have done it. Its obvious.

Until a competitor enters the market, or another is created, these are the only business doing what they do as they do it. YouTube or daily motion or another? It’s hard to blame one company for its successes when another couldn’t rise to the occasion and beat them in the market. I.E. it’s on the individual to express self restraint and say no. When a person fails to do this, they can only blame themselves. Ex: if you have a Facebook addiction odds are you’ve known for years. It’s up to you to fix yourself. Cancel culture=participation trophy=everybody else’s fault but your own.

Customers determine what is used and what service dies. The Europeans refuse to be customer focused, so they were steamrolled in the tech market. A letter by rich middle aged white women complaining isn’t going to change that.

Ban it all together, come up with European solutions based on a different monetizing system.

The just asking questions crowd needs to be dealt with the most harshly… and Jack Dorsey needs to step down from Twitter Mark Zuckerberg they have enough damn money Jack Dorsey and Zuckerberg need to be forced out.. Jack Dorsey has had a personal relationship with Ali Alexander one of the leaders of the insurrection… just as recent as about a month ago he still has several active Twitter accounts… they clearly are not able to do it on their own so they need to be held personally responsible forget people post that’s it that’s all there is to it… repeal 230 immediately

I got no beef with breaking these up, still there are Conglomerates out there hidden through trust funds, parrent companies owning shares and several other obfuscation technics which are combined bigger than any one of GAFA. Those too should be considered a direct threat to democracy.

I would be more than happy if Mark Zuckerberg gets arrested or facebook goes down one day, because social media is making people narcissists and stealing our privacy.

*You just grow and earn is the only way the biggest way to stay in power is to acquire potential threats time to time. That’s how Google and Apple grows by the time some competitor rises they buy it*

It is interesting to see that, in the US, Big Tech is under fire from both sides of the political spectrum. The left criticizes it for good reason: it collects too much private data. The right’s criticism is totally without merit: "They censor conservative speech". The fact is that conservatives are flooding every medium with their opinion. But regardless, Big Tech is nobody’s friend these days.

Other Things bother me related to stalking outside of Facebook. No option to hide your follow list or like lists from the public so the choice is to be public or be unnoticed online No option for a private comment on a post. The option should be law, it’s like I’m forced to share my phone book with everyone online. I suspect ghosting issues maybe too with odd legal corporate collabs, even on dating apps I suspect corporate departments are looking to stalk their employees and even block them communicating with people. Who has access to private messages, low level army, private security, or police, or even worse Are neighbourhood’s watch vigilante groups following neighbour’s with spy software, stalking of public follow lists and public messages is something easily improved so it bothers me that private options are not there outside of Facebook to protect me from people trolling my followers lists on other apps like Instagram and tiktok.
