Cameras have come a long way over the years, and you no longer need to spend a fortune to get great photos in most cases. But how little can you get away with spending? I visit Snowdonia National park with the cheapest camera I could find on Amazon in this video, to see if a camera that has 18 megapixels and costs less than a t-shirt can deliver good results!

I literally when from looking at this to looking at an ARRI Alexa LF and Hasselblad. Also, your smartphone camera is almost certainly better so don’t waste your money. I’m personally planning on getting Sony A1

I liked the photos from the cheap camera more than the pixel, I guess I’d use my soft gnd to get a bit more of dynamic range, a simple tripod for cellphones and that is all. The Pixel has much computational alteration to my taste.

I preferred the cheap camera Vs the Pixel…

  8. Effy Traveler on December 14, 2021 at 10:39 pm

….I bought a Canon T6 to practice using a DSLR and see if I would in a year’s time want to invest in a medium film format camera (do 35mm photography) or a better dslr. ….You are making me scared that 18mp camera is shit.

  9. CathyAnn on December 14, 2021 at 10:39 pm

The camera may be rubbish, but look at how much fun you had in trying it out! That was worth the price of the camera right there! lol!

what are the odds that it is actually 18 megamixels

  12. Emanuel Abel on December 14, 2021 at 10:42 pm

    Does it have raw ?

  13. Andreas Suojanen on December 14, 2021 at 10:44 pm

Another reason to have many megapixels is to be able to crop a lot

I love my GR III. It’s about the size of that toy but it’s a street and landscape photography juggernaut. Crazy little camera for when I don’t necessarily want to have my big lens-swapper. I highly recommend it to any photographer out there, regardless of your focus.

    You: definitely don’t buy this
    Me: buys it
I actually like the bad quality I want a cheap camera to haul around and take harmless pictures of things just for keepsakes. It’ll be fun. 🙂

I take so many "Pic stops" when walking/cycling that it seems quite fitting as a term.

Just got a tiny little Samsung ST30 for 3$ to clean up and use as a "workbag" camera when I need to leave my Rebel T6 at home.

The 10mp ccd on a 10 year old camera should have some strange characteristics to it to play with, and the 28mm to 85mm zoom should cover my preferred range

I recently bought a collection of old digital cameras from ebay and included was the 21MP Adberg Best camera. Looks identical to this one. It can be easily found on alibaba and the camera is 5 megapixel. It has a fixed aperture with the ISO and shutter speed varying. It often goes to quite a slow shutter speed, 50, 80 etc so you have to hold it very steady to get focused shots. It’s a fixed focus lense too with a macro physical switch. Obviously it’s a complete waste of time using any resolution above 5MP. It slows the camera down as it interpolates the image and stores it, so you are wasting storage space, time and of course battery life.

The feature set is limited, it’s a very basic camera. However it has to be said although there is a tendency for many shots to be ruined because of the slow shutter speed, in good light I’ve been reasonably impressed with the camera’s images.

The thing is though in collection of camera’s I got a basic 3MP Kodak camera without optical zoom but with variable aperture and a wider ISO and shutter range and that camera produces more consistent images of slightly better quality. It’s a better camera for stills although massively inferior for video.

If you think about we can buy compact cameras now that came out in 2005-2012 for as little as £5 even though they were maybe retailing at £150 or more back then. £30 today taking inflation in reverse is perhaps £15 or so back then, so you are comparing a new £15 camera to a £150 camera. Even allowing for technology moving on that is still a huge gulf in cost.

I should point out on alibaba the camera is clearly described as a children’s camera or student’s camera. The manufacturer has no illusion about the camera quality but obviously the people selling them on Amazon may have other ideas.

  24. Robert Gorden on December 14, 2021 at 10:57 pm

Not a fair comparison. If you want to show what you can do with a small sensor camera at least use older ones from major manufacturers. They will be no more expensive than what you used, have better lenses, better sensors, better processors, less noise and better dynamic range. Use these cameras at ISO 200 and below and for the most part you won’t be disappointed. Comparing them to much, much more expensive Cell Phone cameras is bogus. These do have state of the art lenses, sensors and especially processors. If you want to compare say an old Canon Power shot with a top of the line cell phone camera you need to use the best post that you can. Money in the end will matter. But how much depends on the demands of the work you are doing and how much you really wanted to spend on a telephone.

Disposable film cameras are far better than this toy camera..

    Is the camera waterproof

  27. P Wood on December 14, 2021 at 10:59 pm

I lov the images from this seem to be pulling a kind of 35mm look. Be interesting to see what a 6 x 4 print looks like buddy

  28. Geoffrey Piltz on December 14, 2021 at 10:59 pm

You overpaid. You can get one on eBay for £18 + £3.10 postage.

  29. Rob Lester on December 14, 2021 at 10:59 pm

LOL, yeah, I’d rather buy a use 12mp canon compact camera 😀

what this video proves is 30 pound camera in awesome place is much better than state of art expensive camera in backyard.

I didn’t twig where you were until you said tryfan. I’ve taken pictures of the same mountain using an even cheaper camera; I made it from a matchbox I found on the ground, and part of a can from an emerge energy drink, a sliver of plastic I took from an ice cream tub, and a lot of black electrical tape. Pinholes ftw

Everyone over 50 (including me): My first camera was a Kodak Instamatic and I would have been thrilled – thrilled, I tell you – with image quality like that….

  39. Zumzifero on December 14, 2021 at 11:20 pm

7 years ago I had a Sony zoom camera with 18mp and a zeiss branded lens… and it was rubbish!
My much older Lumix 8mp zoom camera had far better IQ
What killed those P&S zoom camera were not the phones as they said, but the stupid MP race, the ludicrious zoom advertised and how bad and often cheap the package was. Early P&S cameras, like from 2005 to 2012 were actually better (and proportionally expensive) tools to carry in your pocket, with better lenses then modern smartphones

  40. neil piper on December 14, 2021 at 11:21 pm

I bought a 5 megapiel Casio xilim with a 5x Pentax lens used for £20.
    Its black and perfect.
I had one back in 2004 and had it stolen. I missed it so I bought it again 2 weeks ago and am very happy.

  41. Markus Allgaier on December 14, 2021 at 11:21 pm

I once bought a used Nikon 1 for 100 bucks on ebay and it lasted me 7 years, and that will be hard to beat with a phone. I recently replaced it with a Nikon DSLR I found used for $85. Sooooooooo…. that’s a thing.

  42. Tulio Botinha on December 14, 2021 at 11:22 pm

  44. WUBBSY on December 14, 2021 at 11:26 pm

This thing pretty sure has a 2MP Sensor. Maybe 5 MP if they were generous. The 18MP are just fake. Its with all of these cheap cameras. Also the lense, its all standard components they buy for cheap.

  45. P Wood on December 14, 2021 at 11:27 pm

Love the financial advice about buying an old phone hand set and dedicate it to a pocket camera

  46. Ed venuto on December 14, 2021 at 11:28 pm

I just bought the nikon d3. It was still expensive on ebay. After using it I would never want to use a cheap camera. The d3 is a full frame professional camera. 11 fps 51 focus points. Low light. My camera has 12 mp but full frame is really what counts
