The best mirrorless cameras of 2021 and how to pick one

The last year has seen some huge camera releases, including the Canon R5 and R6, and Sony A1 and A7S III, and Nikon’s Z7 II. There are also great mirrorless cameras coming out with micro four-thirds and APS-C sensors, and there are now solid options all the way up and down the price scale. Here’s what to look for when buying a new camera, and a few of our favorite models.

One of the most complicated videos I have ever seen. There is a lot of information which is great but it makes it confusing even more

  2. Geert Delmulle on December 8, 2021 at 7:59 pm

10:35 what crap is that?! APS-C is a sensor size equivalent to 35mm film?! Excuse me?! That’s FF (Full Frame), man, hence the name. Get your facts right!

I would only buy a mirrorless camera because it is supposed to have better image quality than a DSLR.

  7. Electronic Fellows on December 8, 2021 at 8:04 pm

    no sony a7 iii?

  8. Gary Brown on December 8, 2021 at 8:06 pm

I get beautiful bokeh with micro four thirds
And Olympus image stabilization can not be beat all the need is a update menu and a new sensor

  9. Moises Muñoz on December 8, 2021 at 8:08 pm

This is perfect video my man

  10. Lars Larsen on December 8, 2021 at 8:10 pm

You conflated medium format with full frame. And you said APS-C is the size of 35mm film, but it’s not, full frame is.

  11. Shopeefy on December 8, 2021 at 8:11 pm

So interesting to see little difference with the upgraded camera tech. Great vid as always!

Wonder why Canon M 50 didn’t make the list and the m200 did?

  16. Rares Dan Pologea on December 8, 2021 at 8:17 pm

    Nikon Z5, 6 and 7 are full frame, not APS-C. it’s only the Z50 that’s APS-C

  17. ?????? on December 8, 2021 at 8:19 pm

For Sony’s a1, they should’ve made 2 variants, 1 with flip out screen, and one with tilting screen. Some people like tilting but most people like flip out screen more.

  18. Ray Jenkins on December 8, 2021 at 8:20 pm

An important & often overlooked – this video included – aspect is the ‘ usability ‘ of the camera. I find Sony is the worst with it’s ponderous menu system, no flip out monitor & no ‘ ese-of-use ‘ touch interface ‘. Panasonic has these all 3 of these features as well as a customizable ‘ Quick Menu ‘ & lots of customizable function buttons – both soft & hard. I call it the ‘ fun to use ‘ factor and my Panasonic G9 has it ! I don’t care how good a cameras sensor is if the rest of the camera is a pain to use.

  19. John Knowles a Cyclist-Photographer on December 8, 2021 at 8:21 pm

Everyone talks about the features a camera has and how the image quality looks but no one mentions the color. Sony has the flattest color and no matter what the specs, I found is dismal at best. Go Canon if going mirorless all day and Nikon if still sticking with a DSLR. Sony is hype and disappointing all the way around. Sony is like eating cardboard – I guess you could, and it might fill you up, but its still cardboard. It makes me laugh that people are so caught up in the Sony hype.

Have no use for one I will keep my mirrored cameras

  21. Kenneth Walton on December 8, 2021 at 8:21 pm

After a lot of research and study, I decided on the Panasonic GH5 body only, which was a steal at $1299. Fortunately, I also found a good overall Panasonic lens, 16-140mm/3.5f to 5.6, for $600 to complete the package. For the price, I believe I got a pretty good setup. Next I’ll purchase a 300mm lens and I should be in good shape for awhile. Thanks for the review.

Is it really that mirrorless cameras can have dust easier than DSLR cameras because you don’t have a mirror to protect your sensor?

  23. CEEPMDEE on December 8, 2021 at 8:25 pm

The Canon 1DC & 5d mark 2/3 were good enough for major big budget films yet the Sony a7r4 is not ideal for video? You can not be serious.

  24. Dan Edmar Almeida on December 8, 2021 at 8:26 pm

i decided to just use my phone.

  25. Muriyanto Muriyanto on December 8, 2021 at 8:26 pm

just talk about photography, drop the video aspect just u can bring down Canon’s overheating issue, if ppl want to shoot video just go buy their cine camera, not mirrorless camera

  26. MikesMovies on December 8, 2021 at 8:31 pm

This is really helpful, it’s so very confusing. Looks like I need a APSC camera then? Fuji XT3 or Nikon Z5 maybe???? I am moving up from a Canon G7X iii I like them but they suck dust onto the sensors which you can’t get off. I do lots of close up videos of model railroads but also landscape photos etc.

  27. erasetheerrors on December 8, 2021 at 8:31 pm

I won’t buy a camera body until these camera companies managed by old people get with the program of manufacturing interchangeable camera lenses that are 75% smaller than what they currently are. I tend to use my camera phone way more despite the image quality than my DSLR kit simply because I don’t feel like lugging around a brick by my side.

This is too much information to process

  29. Sonam Toor on December 8, 2021 at 8:36 pm

Which camera did you use to shoot your video?

  30. OneTrackMind69 on December 8, 2021 at 8:36 pm

    No Rioch GR III?

  31. Roni on December 8, 2021 at 8:39 pm

Would have been cool to have also the Fujifilm X-S10 included. Roughly half the price of the X-T4 yet with exact same sensor, same processor (so same image quality), similar flip out screen and also sensor image stabilization while being more compact and having a MUCH better grip.

Main disadvantages would be being able to internally record only 8 bit video (instead of 10), smaller battery (same one as used in X-T3 and previous models) as well as somewhat lower resolution display and viewfinder. And Fujifilm purists might dislike it for having a PASM-style dial instead of the dedicated dials.

  42. ForeverYoung on December 8, 2021 at 8:55 pm

Crazy how they mentioned M43 sensor is the best for autofocus and mentioned the GH5 as being best for video but failed to mention the atrocious video autofocus?

  43. Indigo Foxx on December 8, 2021 at 8:55 pm

"the down sides are bad rolling shutter and low resolution EVM" yeah.. that sounds awful
    Now what does that mean?

  44. Edward Northern on December 8, 2021 at 8:58 pm

Depth of field is from lens, not sensor.
